Visualizing Obama's victory
A new reader I've known for a long time emailed me with this link to a series of fascinating maps (with explanations for how they're prepared) created by Mark Newman, the Paul Dirac Collegiate Professor of Physics at the University of Michigan. I'll reproduce one of the most interesting (and, arguably, meaningful) here:
So what do you think Obama's victory looks like? A large bird, taking wing and headed for the left, as viewed from behind? If so, is it eagle, phoenix, or buzzard?
Here, by contrast, is the analogous map for Bush's 2004 victory:
It makes me think for some reason of a profile-shot, attacking from right to left, of the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Perhaps Obama found the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch to use against McCain.

Obama: A great big ol' cuckoo bird that squawks a good game but can't get off the ground and defend its nest when it really matters.
Bush: A koi fish, swimming toward the right but without much interest in fighting the heavy current running against him.

Hmm? Looks like a butterfly. But stings like a bee.
And, whatever maps you care to paint, here, Obama is the President of the United States. There's nobody else.
As to those who are die-hard conservatives, there's this belief in "less government." So, there ya go. Less powers granted within the political sphere is ahead.
Biggest mistake of the 2004 cycle? Well, the prize goes to conservatives, who were SURE they could "pre-pick" the next president. So they voted in lesser numbers during the primaries. Giving the "gift" of being the party's nominee to McCain.
McCain, meanwhile, didn't get adoration from the press. And, McCain failed to get: Hillary's voters. Independent voters. And, just plain democratic voters. (While, if I'm allowed to guess, Bob Barr picked up plenty of disgusted voters, who understodd that "making a statement" doesn't involve picking either the winnah. Or the loser.)
And, then? There's this potential. That Obama, a good student of democratic politics, can do better than Bill Clinton! Where he just may diss Hillary's pretensions. And, RULE from the White House with FDR's grasp of politics. Inside and out. It just remains to be seen. That's all.
While now? So many conversatives who couldn't pick a presidential nominee who could win, to save their skins ... Are now "squawking" that Obama blows it.
It's not as if the crystal balls in use actually work.
It's an "attitude thing." While the rest of the country just moved on.
