Yay! It's Palin!
I'm enthused — and oh-so-pleasantly surprised! — about John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate, for all of the reasons stated in my previous posts about her [and new ones, which I'll be adding to this table as I write them — Beldar]:
You don't know her yet, Americans, not most of you. But I've been writing here, and elsewhere, all summer that she is the real deal. Committed conservatives who've been really digging into the conceivable Veep nominees have recognized that with their responses to a variety of internet polls in which she's done very well against better-known and more conventional choices like Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty. To get to know her, you could do considerably worse than starting with my posts, the photos and links they contain, and the excellent and knowledgeable comments, including skeptical ones, that they've inspired.
Suffice it to say that today, John McCain has made me a happy camper and, for the very first time, an enthusiastic supporter of the 2008 GOP ticket. I'm even going to replace the "Grumpy Old Man" endorsement in my sidebar.
And bravo to the McCain campaign for their incredible discipline in keeping this decision under their collective hats!
(PS: Happy anniversary to Gov. Palin and First Dude Todd! And happy birthday to the grumpy old man himself!)
-------------------
UPDATE (Fri Aug 29 @ 12:40pm): Commenter rfy says he's contributed $250 online to the McCain-Palin campaign today after having previously given exactly zero. He points out that "donating to the McCain/Palin campaign is a great way for conservatives to demonstrate our agreement and enthusiasm for Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin." I second that comment, and add this: If McCain is elected, he needs to understand that it was due to wide-spread support from committed conservatives who are taking a chance on him — not just moderates and undecideds. Today, you have a chance to re-enforce and reward, in a tangible way, this profoundly conservative decision by John McCain.

Well, it's your blog.
But I'd keep grumpy and just add tough, smart SOB who told the Viet Minh what they could do over five and a half years of torture.
And congratulations again.

She has a much different-sounding speaking voice than I anticipated from her looks. It's warmer and deeper than I thought.
An interesting juxtaposition will occur with her and Obama, in terms of adulation and worship. We'll have the acolytes of the Obamessiah on the one hand, and the groupies of the VPILF on the other. Identity politics has entered a new age.

OK Beldar, admit it. You put the cone back on one more time and did a superiority dance around the desk.
Good call on Palin. I think she'll be better than most folks could imagine.

I had donated exactly $0 to John McCain (or any other presidential candidate) so far this year. But, solely because of the boldness, wisdom, vision (keep adding superlatives) of his selection of Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, I just donated $250 online. I'd appreciate it if you would mention to your readers that donating to the McCain/Palin campaign is a great way for conservatives to demonstrate our agreement and enthusiasm for Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin.
By the way, Gov. Palin is a sitting governor and deserves the use of the title even more than former governors such as Gov. Romney.
One more thing, America's energy policy will be a huge issue in this election and Gov. Palin's level of energy knowledge/experience (as governor and previously on Alaska's Oil and Gas Conservation Commission) is way above all the others on both tickets.

Dear Mr. Dyer: Another reason Sarah Palin should not be nominated is that she's so much more an attractive a candidate than McC, that, should he win, even Cindy will try to bump him off: "Sorry, honey, Sarah's just a better Prez than you are..." Good Lord, I better give up this to-the-bitter-end diehardism before I'm recruited to the Hillary -for-Prez campaign!
Sir, you called the turn, and all the best congratulations to you. It's a risky move, but as with all risky moves, the possibility of great rewards is there. Now to make it come true:
Vote for the Grumpy Old Man and his terrific Veep!
Sincerely yours,
Gregory Koster

Well, I'm certainly glad that worked out better than, um, that other nomination for, ah, some court, I forget which. (I kid because I love.)
Another months-long blogging sabbatical from you would've been tough, especially in an election year...
Please keep those insights rolling, sir!

Congratulations on being ahead of the curve. Over lunch yesterday, the VP choice was being discussed; one fellow was speculating Hutchinson R-Tx and I said 'The single woman demographic is a huge one for him to have an impact in.' Maybe this will help.

Even though both the electoral map and strong national trends are against McCain, and McCain will probably lose this election to Obama, he's fighting for it and making smart decisions. I respect that.
Any other year and he'd win.

Beldar: You called it, and mazel tov for your persistence. Congratulations go to Governor Palin and her family, and to Senator McCain for making a wholly unexpected, but very welcome, pick. (As for the debates, presumably McCain's foreign policy advisers have been compiling a briefing book for the VP choice who -- especially if McCain chose a governor like Romney, Pawlenty, Ridge or Sanford -- would inevitably need a crash course in the world's hot spots. As long as Palin doesn't confuse Tlibisi with Savannah, she'll more than hold her own with The Great Bloviator.)

Another well done campaign.
Now we have to get you on the Ayers/Obama Chicago Annenberg Challenge story that Professors Kurtz (from the right) and Diamond (from the left) are working on.
I have predicted this story will be more damaging to BHO than Kerry's VN problems were to him.
But it is going to take some digging. Clarice Feldman's story today on Pajamas Media summarizes the current state of the story well.

I started checking your blog as soon as I heard the news that Sarah Palin had actually been chosen as McCain's VP pick to see what your reaction would be. Vindication! I'm over the moon about it. A check is on the way Senator McCain.

Powerline needs a bit of a pick-me-up. I think they are bummed that a Minnesota guy didn't get it.
I think they would respect your views.

Vnjagvet, as for the Power Line guys, I respect their views. But I am confident they will warm up to her. I'm not impatient with anyone who has flop sweat, as Jonah Goldberg called it, about this pick. It is a swing for the fences, an unconventional choice. She's very strong on areas where McCain is weak (executive experience, energy policy, a whole slew of core conservative social values, and down-home charisma and unaffected star quality). She's less strong on the areas where he himself is already the hands-down winner in this race: foreign policy experience, military experience, and overall years in government. They overlap as reformers, in a year when the GOP needs reform like the carcass of a dead elephant needs burial. She complements the ticket, and I genuinely believe millions of Americans who don't know her any better than the Power Line guys do will grow to adore her by November — probably sooner.

DRJ, those little known facts about Gov. Palin are hilarious. I suspect Chuck Norris will become a Palin fan, if he's not already.

The Return of Femininity
Oh, how refreshing Sarah Palin is and will be as the next Vice-President of the Great United States. Just imagine, femininity arrives to the second highest office in the free world.
As a woman, my heart is filled with a pride that left a long time ago when women like M. Louise Veronica Ciccone (otherwise known as Madonna) became the standard for womanhood. Madonna and her ilk are and have always been such an embarrassment to me.
Our young girls will finally have a natural role model. A wholesome, intelligent, articulate, successful woman who can balance the critically important roles of being a wife, a mother and a public servant.
Young men can look to this lovely lady in her subordinate role as someone they might wish their future wife to emulate (I do believe that John McCain will be a strong President who will maintain the dignity, solemnity and leadership role of the Presidential office).
I am as happy as I could possibly be with Senator John McCain and his excellent choice of Sarah Palin as Vice President.

Beldar,
Thanks again for all the postings on Sarah Palin over the summer. I was only slightly less delighted than you when I heard the news--and for the same reasons. One of the first things I did was to point Gov. Palin out to my 14 year-old daughter as a very worthy role model. This is the most significant event of the 2008 campaign--that woman is selected on her merits and not her gender or family affiliation. A great day for this country, I think.
