Former counsel to the President urges Kerry to sue SwiftVets for defamation

Another famous name has urged Sen. Kerry to sue the SwiftVets for defamation in a new op-ed on FindLaw.com, which identifies this author as "a former counsel to the President."

He's also a former counsel, period.  As in โ€” disbarred.  There was that prison term thingy, if I recall correctly.  It's generally pretty hard to keep your bar card when you've been convicted of felony obstruction of justice.  I suppose, though, that neither FindLaw.com nor CNN (which republished his column) figured they  needed to mention that part, since John W. Dean is probably one of the most famous disbarred lawyers ever.

I've already blogged at my usual tedious length about a previous suggestion to this same effect from The New Republic columnist Kenneth Baer, and I'm not inclined to waste any of my time or bandwidth on John W. Dean.  John O'Neill has practically begged Sen. Kerry to sue.  Yeah, that'll happen โ€” about the time that Licorice the Unlucky Hamster learns to fly in formation with VC the Combat Dog.

John Dean wrote a column on the impeachment of George Bush. I got halfway through. Slovenly, idiotic crap. Maybe Mo writes the columns and he signs them.

Hmmmm, guess they're too lazy to use a fact-checker on this one:

"How should Kerry deal with the attacks? He should take a page from the playbook of the last U.S. Senator to receive his party's presidential nomination: Barry Goldwater, in 1964."

If you ignore George McGovern in 1972 and Bob Dole in 1996 (who did resign from the Senate at some point in the campaign), then yes, Barry Goldwater is the last U.S. Senator to receive his party's presidential nomination.

Now you're just beating them up!! He, he, he...

But I understand they're easy targets, and it is kinda fun, in its way.

Maybe my memory is slipping. . . .

Wasn't Hubert Humphrey a senator before running for President? Or did he resign his senatorial position to become Johnson's vice President?

Walter Mondale should deserve a mention too, since he was in the Senate, albeit Vice President when he ran against Reagan.

Jonh Dean is definitely crackers. Since truth is an absolute defense to defamation, one can only imagine the discovery that would perforce ensue if such a lawsuit were filed. It would be hilarious seeing O'Neill's camp issue a subpoena for Kerry's military records and the wailing that would result from the Kerry camp. End of lawsuit. Of course, O'Neill could file a counterclaim and continue the whole proceeding. Nah, I don't think Kerry will file a lawsuit, but thanks for the great "analysis," Herr Lunatic.

Another thing I forgot to mention: John "Crackers" Dean is so sure the Swiftees are lying . . . why? Was he present at the events discussed in the book? He mangles his one example almost beyond recognition of what is in the book.

I have a better idea: Kerry can release all of his military records and hold a press conference to discuss each and every one of the Swiftees' allegations. Perhaps we could even have Kerry-O'Neill II.

John Dean has become such a left-wing kook it's hard to believe he was in the Nixon administration. Even more disturbing is FindLaw.com, which acts like a front for the ABA and DNC rather than an objective news source.

Narniaman, I decided to cut Dean a break and assume that he meant nominated while still a senator; Humphrey was the sitting Veep in 1968 and Mondale was, I believe, out of office from 1981-84 (and afterwards too). Gore, the Democrats' nominee the last time around had also been a Senator before becoming Veep, as had Goldwater's opponent in 1964, LBJ, as had Nixon, who was nominated in 1968 & 1972.
